Success Story

Public Transport Security Unit

Following the increase in suicide bomber attacks on busses at the beginning of the 2000s, there was a decision to reopen in a more organized manner the public transport security unit – “Shield Unit” - in the beginning in Jerusalem and later on in the remaining sections of the country.

The primary activity of the unit was placed on the shoulders of Yamit’s security branch, which was responsible for recruiting, training, guiding, running and ongoing management of in excess of 200 armed guards, security examiners, some eight patrol cars which secured almost every bus stop and major transportation artery in the capitol.; All of which was carried out through the security center that was especially set up and prepared for this project, in close collaboration with the Egged bus cooperative and Israel Police.

Over the years during which the unit was active, Yamit was responsible for carrying out the varied professional training in which there were training sessions for shooting, hand-to-hand combat, combat fitness, operational driving, procedures and principles for identifying hostile terror activity, etc.
